A huge well-preserved castle, situated
on quartzite cliff above the settlement Píla in Little Carpathians. Originally a kingly castle from
the middle of the 13th century, a part of West Hungary border
fortification. At the beginning of the 16th century the castle
became property of the Thurzo family and from 1535 it was possessed
by the Fugger family who belonged to richest European magnates and financiers.
At the end of the 16th century the castle owner changed again
– it was the Palffy family who resided there until 1945. The Palffy
family changed the austere and simple fortress to a renaissance-baroque
residence with a beautiful interior decoration. Well-preserved interiors
with rich painted stucco decorations filled with figural scenes of apotheosis
and mythological scenes and specially equipped hall of terrene from
1656 made by the Italian master J. Tencallo are impressive.
